How to Turn Off Screen Auto Rotation in Windows 11

This post show students and new users steps to enable or disable screen rotation lock in Windows 11. If your device is a convertible PC or tablet, Windows will automatically rotate the screen when its physical orientation changes similarly to your smartphone.

Windows also allows you to lock your screen rotation in place so that it doesn’t automatically rotate as well. If you have a table PC and rotation is locked, you can use the steps below to unlock it so that Windows automatically rotate the screen.

This feature is only available on devices with a built-in accelerometer. Windows uses this hardware component to determine the screen’s current physical orientation.

Below we’ll show you how to turn on, lock rotation in place or turn off so that screen can rotate automatically when the screen current physical position is changed.

To get started with enabling or disabling rotation lock in Windows 11, follow the steps below.

If you don’t want Windows to automatically rotate, then lock screen rotation in place. The steps below show you how.

Alternatively, you can use the search box on the taskbar and search for Settings. Then select to open it.

On the Display settings pane, under Scale & layout, location the Rotation lock tile, then toggle the button to the On position to lock rotation in place. When enabled or turned On, the screen will not rotate with a physical orientation change.

If the device is in laptop mode, the Rotation lock tile and the Rotation lock toggle in the Settings app may appear grayed out. If your device has a removable screen, rotation lock will be grayed out while the screen is connected to keyboard.

When the device is back in tablet mode, then you may be able to change the rotation settings as shown above.
