How to Turn Off Screen Auto Rotation in Windows 11

This post show students and new users steps to enable or disable screen rotation lock in Windows 11. If your device is a convertible PC or tablet, Windows will automatically rotate the screen when its physical orientation changes similarly to your smartphone.

Windows also allows you to lock your screen rotation in place so that it doesn’t automatically rotate as well. If you have a table PC and rotation is locked, you can use the steps below to unlock it so that Windows automatically rotate the screen.

This feature is only available on devices with a built-in accelerometer. Windows uses this hardware component to determine the screen’s current physical orientation.

Below we’ll show you how to turn on, lock rotation in place or turn off so that screen can rotate automatically when the screen current physical position is changed.

How to turn on screen rotation lock in Windows 11

As mentioned above, Windows automatically rotates the screen on convertible PC or table devices, similarly to a mobile phone.

If you don’t want Windows to automatically rotate, then lock screen rotation in place. The steps below show you how.

Windows 11 has a centralized location for majority of its settings. From system configurations to creating new users and updating Windows, all can be done from its System Settings pane.

To get to System Settings, you can use the Windows key + i shortcut or click on Start ==> Settings as shown in the image below:

Alternatively, you can use the search box on the taskbar and search for Settings. Then select to open it.

Windows Settings pane should look similar to the image below. In Windows Settings, click System, then select the Display tile on the right pane of your screen shown in the image below.

On the Display settings pane, under Scale & layout, location the Rotation lock tile, then toggle the button to the On position to lock rotation in place. When enabled or turned On, the screen will not rotate with a physical orientation change.

If the device is in laptop mode, the Rotation lock tile and the Rotation lock toggle in the Settings app may appear grayed out. If your device has a removable screen, rotation lock will be grayed out while the screen is connected to keyboard.

When the device is back in tablet mode, then you may be able to change the rotation settings as shown above.

How to disable rotation lock in Window 11

If you change your mind about locking the screen rotation automatically, you can simply this it so that your screen can rotate again.

To do that, reverse the steps above by going to the Start menu ==> Windows Settings ==> Display and toggle the Rotation lock button to the Off position.

The Rotation lock settings can also quickly be accessed from the Quick Settings on the taskbar as shown below.

Or use the keyboard shortcuts below to quickly enable or disable Rotation lock.

Press the Windows key + O to toggle Rotation lock On or Off (default).
