This article describes the steps to add or remove the power button on the sign-in screen in Windows 11.
By default, you can Shutdown your computer without signing into Windows. All Windows computers have a button on the sign-in screen that allows you to put your computer to sleep, hibernate, shut down, or restart.
Windows also has a policy setting to remove the power button from the sign-in screen. This setting determines whether you can shut down a device without having to sign in to Windows.
Below is how to add or remove the power button on the sign-in screen when using Windows 11.
Add or remove the power button on the sign-in screen via the local security policy
As described above, a power button is added to the Windows sign-in screen by default. It allows users to shut down the computer without having to sign into Windows.
Here’s how to add or remove it.
First, open the Local Security Policy Editor. You can also use the command secpol.msc to launch it.
In the Local Security Policy Editor, expand the Local Policies folders in the left pane, and select the Security Options folder.
On the right, doubl-click the policy “Shutdown: Allow system to be shut down without having to log on“
On the policy window, select one of the options below:
- Enabled – Show the power button on the sign-in screen.
- Disabled – Remove the power button on the sign-in screen.
Save your settings and exit.

Alternatively, users can use the Windows registry editor to show or hide the power button on the sign-in screen.
First, open the Windows Registry, and navigate to the folder key path as listed below.
If you don’t see the System folder key, right-click on the Policies parent key, then create the subkey (System) folder.
On the right pane of the System folder key, right-click and select New -> DWORD (32-bit) Value. Type a new key named shutdownwithoutlogon.
Double-click the new value name (shutdownwithoutlogon) and enter the Value data of 1 to show the power button on the sign-in screen.
A Value data of 0 will hide the power button on the sign-in screen.
That should do it. Restart your computer for the changes to apply.
